Part of the 2014 Pacific hurricane season |
Hurricane Iselle was a strong tropical cyclone that formed in the Pacific Ocean. It was a big storm that worried the people of Hawaii, especially those living in Hilo. Iselle started on July 31, 2014. It was the first hurricane to reach the Hawaiian Islands in 22 years.
Iselle became a very powerful Category 4 hurricane as it moved closer to Hawaii. At its strongest, it had winds blowing at about 138 miles per hour (222 km/h). But as it got very close to the islands, the storm started to lose some of its power.
Iselle Reaches Hawaii
Hurricane Iselle hit the Big Island as a strong tropical storm. The center of the storm arrived around 2:30 AM on August 8. It caused a lot of damage, knocking down many trees. About 25,000 homes lost electric power.
The storm also created huge waves, some as tall as 25 feet (7.6 meters). Because of the bad weather, about 50 flights were cancelled. This made it hard for people to travel to and from the islands.
After the Landfall
After hitting the Big Island, Iselle moved towards the northwest. It did not directly hit the other Hawaiian islands. However, these islands still got a lot of rain and strong winds from the storm.
Sadly, one person was lost during the storm on Kauai. The storm showed how powerful nature can be.
