A Look Back: Hussar's History
Hussar began around 1913. That's when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) set up a train station there. They named the station Hussar. A community quickly grew up around this new station.
How Hussar Got Its Name
The name "Hussar" comes from a group of German soldiers. These soldiers were part of a special cavalry (horseback riding) army unit called a Hussar regiment. They had started a big farm near where the village is now.
Growth and New Beginnings
When World War I started, most of these soldiers went back to Germany. Those who stayed had to live in special camps during the war. After the war ended, their land was bought. The village and the area around it started to grow. Many new settlers came from all over the world. People from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Denmark were some of the main groups. Many families living in Hussar today are descendants of these early settlers. Hussar officially became a village on April 20, 1928.
