The Hyloxalus patitae is a small frog species. It belongs to the Dendrobatidae family, which includes many types of dart frogs. This frog is special because it is only found in one country: Peru. When an animal or plant is found only in one specific place, we say it is endemic to that area.
This frog was first discovered in a place near Comunidad Nativa de Davis. This area is in the Cordillera El Sira mountains, located in the Pasco Region of Peru. The exact spot where a species is first found is called its "type locality." Scientists think this frog might also live in the nearby El Sira Communal Reserve, which is a protected area.
Where the Patitae Frog Lives
The Hyloxalus patitae frog loves to live in very wet places. Its natural habitat is humid rainforests. These are forests that get a lot of rain and are always moist. You can often find these frogs living right next to small streams. They also like areas near waterfalls, where the air is always damp and cool.
Why This Frog Needs Help
Sadly, the Hyloxalus patitae frog might be in danger. Its home, the rainforest, is being cut down. This is called logging. When trees are cut down in the lower parts of the Cordillera El Sira, the frogs lose their homes. This makes it harder for them to find food, shelter, and places to lay their eggs. Scientists are working to understand how many of these frogs are left and how best to protect them and their unique rainforest home.
