The Hyloxalus ruizi is a small frog that belongs to the Dendrobatidae family. This family is also known as the poison dart frog family. This special frog is only found in Colombia, a country in South America.

You can find the Hyloxalus ruizi in the Eastern Andes mountains of Colombia. Specifically, it lives in a region called the Cundinamarca Department. This frog was first described by scientists in 1982.

Where Does the Hyloxalus ruizi Live?

This frog's natural habitat is in cloud forests. These are misty forests often found in mountains. The Hyloxalus ruizi prefers to stay on the forest floor. It also likes to be near small streams.

Why is the Hyloxalus ruizi in Danger?

Sadly, the Hyloxalus ruizi is a critically endangered frog. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever. The biggest threat to this frog is habitat loss.

People are cutting down the cloud forests where these frogs live. They clear the land to plant crops and to raise cattle. When the forests are destroyed, the Hyloxalus ruizi loses its home and has nowhere to live. Protecting these forests is very important to save this unique frog.
