Hyundai Engineering and Construction has a long and interesting history. It started small and grew into a global leader.
How Hyundai Construction Began
The company was founded in 1947 by Chung Ju-yung. It was first known as the Hyundai Civil Works Company. This company was a big part of the original Hyundai Group. In 1999, Hyundai Construction and Hyundai Engineering joined together.
Building in the Middle East
In the 1970s and 1980s, Hyundai Construction played a big role in projects in the Middle East. They signed their first contract in 1975. This was to build a shipyard for the Iranian Navy. Many Korean workers went to countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran for these projects. Hyundai was the largest employer for these workers.
Changes in Ownership
From 2001 to 2006, the Hyundai Group split into several different companies. This happened while the company was managed by its creditors. In 2011, Hyundai Motor Group became the new owner of Hyundai Engineering & Construction. This decision was made by Korean banks after a bidding process.
