Early Life and Education
Håkan Juholt was born in Oskarshamn, a town in Sweden. His father worked as a printer and was involved in a workers' union. His grandfather, Arvid Källström, was a well-known artist.
After finishing high school (called gymnasium in Sweden), Håkan Juholt started working. In 1980, he became a photographer and journalist. He worked for a newspaper called Östra Småland. This newspaper was linked to the Social Democratic party. He is still officially employed there but has been on leave since he was elected to parliament in 1994. In the early 1980s, he reported from Poland about the Solidarity movement.
Political Career
From 1984 to 1990, Håkan Juholt was a board member of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League (SSU). This is the youth group of the Social Democratic party. In 1994, he was elected to the Swedish parliament.
In 2004, he became an assistant party secretary. In 2009, he briefly served as the party secretary. Before becoming the party leader, he was the regional chairman for the Social Democrats in Kalmar län. He has also been involved in several other boards and funds. For example, he was the chairman of the board for Oskarshamn's harbour.
Håkan Juholt was also the party's main spokesperson for defence policy. He was a member of important committees that dealt with defence issues. From 1996 to 2011, he was part of the parliamentary committee on defence. He was its chairman from 2010 to 2011. He also attended international meetings, like those of NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Becoming Party Chairman
After the Swedish election in 2010, the Social Democrats lost many votes. Håkan Juholt openly criticized the party's election campaign. He said it was disorganized. When the leader of the party's youth league suggested that the whole board should resign, Håkan Juholt was the first to agree.
On 10 March 2011, an election committee suggested that Håkan Juholt should become the new leader of the Social Democratic party. He was chosen to replace Mona Sahlin. His new leadership was officially elected at the Social Democratic Congress on 25 March 2011.
Later Career and Legacy
After stepping down as party chairman, Håkan Juholt continued to serve as a Member of Parliament for a short time. Later, he was appointed as Sweden's ambassador to Iceland. After that, he became the ambassador to South Africa.
His time as party chairman was short. A documentary film called "Partiledaren som klev ut ur kylan" (The Party Leader Who Stepped Out of the Cold) was made about his leadership. This film was based on a book by Daniel Suhonen.
