Höweler+Yoon facts for kids
Höweler+Yoon (also known as HYA) is a company that designs buildings and creative spaces. It's based in Boston, Massachusetts. Eric Höweler and Meejin Yoon started the company in 2004.
Eric and Meejin first met when they were studying architecture at Cornell University in 1990. They got married in 2002. Two years later, they started their architecture company, Höweler+Yoon.
Cool Projects They've Built
Höweler+Yoon is known for creating new and exciting designs. Their projects often use new technology and are made to feel good for the people who use them.
In 2020, HYA finished a special project at the University of Virginia. It's called the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. This memorial is a place in the landscape that honors people who were forced into labor. It became a place where people could gather and think during protests in June 2020.
The company has also designed other interesting places:
- A tall apartment building called 212 Stuart Street in Boston.
- The MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is a science and technology museum.
- Float Lab, a public art project in Philadelphia. It's a floating lab on the Schuylkill River.

Höweler+Yoon works on many different types of projects. They design buildings for culture and education. They also create apartment and office buildings, public parks, and interactive art.
In 2003, they were asked to design an interactive art piece for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. They have also designed the headquarters for the Boston Society of Architects. Other projects include the Sean Collier Memorial at MIT and the Sky Courts Exhibition Hall in China. They also created an art piece called Swing Time. They are known for working on architecture, city planning, public spaces, and special experiences.
Awards and Recognition
Höweler+Yoon has won many awards for their designs. In 2012, they won the Audi Urban Future Award.

- The Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard Award in 2007.
- The Architecture League of New York’s Emerging Voices Award in 2007.
- The Rome Prize in Design in 2005.
HYA also won the BSA Honor Award in 2015 for the Sean Collier Memorial. In 2018, they received the AIA Small Project Award for their project "Shadow Play". In 2020, Höweler+Yoon won the NOMA/NAACP Seed Award. They also received the AIA New England Honor Award for their Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at UVA.
