J. Meejin Yoon (born in 1972) is a talented Korean-American architect, designer, and teacher. She is known for creating amazing buildings and spaces. In 2014, she became the first woman to lead the Architecture Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later, in July 2018, she was chosen to be the Dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University. In 2004, Yoon started her own company, Höweler+Yoon Architecture, with her partner Eric Höweler.

Meejin Yoon's projects are famous for mixing architecture with new technology and public spaces. Some of her well-known works include "White Noise White Light" for the Athens 2004 Olympics, "Double Horizon" at the San Ysidro Border Crossing, and the Sean Collier Memorial at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These designs often use exciting new technologies in how they are planned and built.

Early Life and Education

Meejin Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea, and grew up in the United States. She studied architecture at Cornell University, earning her degree in 1995. She then continued her studies at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, getting a Master's degree in Urban Design in 1997. After that, she spent time in Seoul, Korea, in 1998, researching architecture and city planning as a Fulbright Fellow. She started teaching at MIT in 2001.

Starting Her Own Design Firms

In 2001, Meejin Yoon created MY Studio. This studio focused on creative projects that combined architecture, art, and technology. A few years later, in 2005, she teamed up with Eric Höweler to start Höweler+Yoon Architecture. This company is an international design firm that works on many different types of projects. They design buildings, city spaces, public areas, and even special experiences. Höweler+Yoon Architecture is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Recognizing Her Achievements

Meejin Yoon has received many important awards for her work. In 2021, she was chosen to join the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is a very high honor for artists in the United States. She also won the Audi Urban Future Award in 2012 and the United States Artist Award in Architecture and Design in 2008. Other awards include Architecture Record's Design Vanguard Award in 2007 and the Rome Prize in Design in 2005. In 2013, MIT gave her the Irwin Sizer Award for improving education. In 2015, she was named a "New Generation Leader" by Architectural Record magazine. In 2022, she received the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts.

Meejin Yoon's designs have been displayed in many famous museums around the world. Her work has been seen at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. It has also been shown at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. Her art has traveled to the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern in Spain and The National Art Center in Tokyo.
