The iPod Classic was a popular portable media player made by Apple Inc.. It let people carry thousands of songs and videos in their pocket. All iPod Classic models used a small hard drive to store music and other files.
The name "Classic" was given to the sixth-generation iPod on September 5, 2007. Before that, it was just called an iPod. Apple stopped making the iPod Classic on September 9, 2014. The very last model to use the original 30-pin connector was the 160GB sixth-generation iPod Classic.
History of the iPod Classic
First iPod: Music in Your Pocket
The very first iPod came out on October 22, 2001. Its slogan was "1000 songs in your pocket." It had a simple black and white screen. You used a special "click wheel" to move through menus and select songs. At first, it could hold 5GB of data. A 10GB version was released in March 2002.
Second iPod: More Storage Options
The second iPod came out on July 17, 2002. It looked a lot like the first one. It offered 10GB and 20GB sizes. Later, a 5GB version was also made available.
Third iPod: New Touch Wheel
On April 29, 2003, Apple released the third-generation iPod. It had a brand new "Click Wheel" that was touch-sensitive. The control buttons were placed below the screen. This iPod came in 10GB, 15GB, and 30GB sizes. In September 2003, Apple's music software, iTunes, became available for Windows computers. This meant more people could use the iPod.
Fourth iPod: Mini's Click Wheel
The fourth-generation iPod was released on July 19, 2004. It borrowed the Click Wheel design from the smaller iPod Mini. It was also a bit thinner and rounder. You could get it in 20GB or 40GB sizes. A special Harry Potter edition iPod was released in 2005. It had the Hogwarts logo on the back and came with all six Harry Potter audiobooks already on it.
iPod Photo: See Your Pictures
A special iPod called the iPod Photo came out on October 26, 2004. This was exciting because it had a color screen! You could also connect it to a TV to show off your photos in a slideshow. It could display many different types of picture files.
iPod with Color Display
On June 28, 2005, the iPod Photo was combined with the regular iPod line. This meant that the standard fourth-generation iPod now had a color screen and could display photos.
Fifth iPod: Videos on the Go
The fifth-generation iPod was released on October 12, 2005, after the iPod Nano. For the first time, you could buy it in either the classic "iPod White" or a new black color. This was also the first iPod that could play videos! It came in 30GB and 60GB sizes. This model was the last to have a plastic body; later versions used metal.
An improved version of the fifth-generation iPod came out on September 12, 2006. It had a brighter screen and could play videos for longer. The 60GB model was replaced with an 80GB model.
Sixth iPod: The "Classic" is Born
The sixth-generation iPod was renamed the iPod Classic. It was released on September 5, 2007. It came in 80GB and 160GB sizes. The traditional white color was replaced with a silver option, and the iPod now had a cool metal body.
An updated version of the sixth-gen iPod was released on September 9, 2008. The 80GB and 160GB models were replaced by a thinner 120GB iPod. This version added the "Genius" feature, which helped you find songs that sounded good together. It also allowed audio recording.
Another update to the sixth-gen iPod came out on September 9, 2009. The 120GB iPod's price was lowered, and a thinner 160GB iPod was brought back. Eventually, the 120GB model was stopped, leaving only the 160GB iPod Classic.
