I Am the Great Horse is an exciting historical fantasy novel written by Katherine Roberts. It was published in 2006 by The Chicken House. This book is perfect for teens and tells the amazing story of Alexander the Great from the unique viewpoint of his loyal horse, Bucephalus.
The Story of Bucephalus
The adventure begins when Bucephalus, a brave horse, meets the young Prince Alexander. This happens in Pella, a city in ancient Macedonia. Bucephalus had been hurt in a battle and lost one eye. But Alexander is the only person who can ride him.
From that moment on, Bucephalus is loyal to Alexander. He carries the prince into many battles. Together, they travel across the world. Alexander wants to find glory and new adventures.
A stable hand named Charm also joins their journey. She is a runaway girl who cares for Bucephalus. Charm helps him deal with the ghosts he sometimes sees. She also understands his proud personality. But Charm has her own secret reasons for staying close to the horse.
Through Bucephalus's eyes, readers experience history, mystery, and thrilling adventures.
Real History Meets Fantasy
Author Katherine Roberts mixed real history with made-up parts in this book. For example, the characters Charmia and Tydeos are fictional. They are stable workers in the royal stables. The mean horsemaster in the story is also not real.
The names of the other horses are also made up. However, the horses themselves were real animals in history. Prince Ochus, who is King Darius's son, has a bigger role in the book than in most historical records. The ghosts that Bucephalus sees are also a fictional element. They add a magical touch to the story.
