Ian Douglas Campbell (born June 18, 1903 – died April 7, 1973) was a Scottish nobleman. He held the important titles of the 11th and 4th Duke of Argyll. He was also the Chief of Clan Campbell, a very old and respected Scottish family. His traditional Gaelic name was MacCailein Mòr.

Early Life and Education
Ian Douglas Campbell was born in Paris, France. His parents were Douglas Walter Campbell and Aimee Marie Suzanne Lawrence. His grandfather, Lord Walter Campbell, was the third son of the 8th Duke of Argyll.
He went to school at Milton Academy in the United States. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university in England.
Military Service in World War II
During the Second World War, Ian Campbell served in the British Army. He was a captain in the 8th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He fought in the Battle of France.
In June 1940, he was captured by enemy forces. He remained a prisoner of war until the war ended in 1945.
Becoming the Duke of Argyll
After the war, a big change happened in his life. His cousin, the 10th Duke of Argyll, passed away in 1949. Ian Douglas Campbell then inherited the titles of Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell.
Family Life
Ian Douglas Campbell was married four times during his life.
First Marriage
His first marriage was to Janet Gladys Aitken. They married on December 12, 1927. Janet was the daughter of a well-known businessman. They had one daughter together:

Ian and Janet divorced in 1934.
Second Marriage
His second marriage was to Louise Hollingsworth Morris Vanneck. They married on November 23, 1935. This marriage brought two sons into the family:
- Ian Campbell, 12th Duke of Argyll (1937–2001). He later became the 12th Duke.
- Colin Ivar Campbell (born 1946)
This marriage ended in divorce in 1951.
Third Marriage
Argyll's third marriage was to Margaret Whigham. They married on March 22, 1951. Margaret was a very famous person in society. They did not have any children together. This marriage ended in divorce in 1963.
Fourth Marriage
His fourth and final marriage was to Mathilda Coster Mortimer. They married on June 15, 1963. From this marriage, they had one daughter:
- Lady Elspeth Campbell (1967–1967), who sadly lived for only five days.
Ian and Mathilda remained married until his death.
Later Life and Passing
Ian Douglas Campbell passed away on April 7, 1973, in a nursing home in Edinburgh, Scotland. His son, Ian, then became the 12th Duke of Argyll.
Most Dukes and Duchesses of Argyll are buried at Kilmun Parish Church. However, Ian Campbell and his son chose a different resting place. They are both buried on the island of Inishail in Loch Awe.
