Ian Campbell was a Scottish nobleman and the leader of Clan Campbell. He was known as the 12th Duke of Argyll. He was also the 5th Duke of Argyll in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. From 1949 to 1973, he was called the Marquess of Lorne. He was born on August 28, 1937, and passed away on April 21, 2001.

The Campbell Family History

The Campbell family has a long and interesting history. They are descended from Gillespic Cambel. About 900 years ago, he gained land in a place called Lochow in Argyll. He got these lands by marrying his cousin, Aife. She was the daughter of Paul an Sporran, who was a Royal Treasurer.

Since the 1200s, the Campbells of Lochow have held the title of Mac Cailein Mhor. This means they are the Chief of Clan Campbell.

Becoming Lords and Dukes

In 1291, Sir Colin Campbell of Lochow was involved in a big event. He was one of the people chosen to support Robert the Bruce. This was during the competition for who would be the King of Scotland.

Later, in 1445, Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochow became a Lord of Parliament. This was under King James II. His son, Colin, was the 2nd Lord Campbell. He was given the title Earl of Argyll in 1457. The 10th Earl of Argyll was later made a Duke in 1701. This was a very important title in Scotland.

Early Life and Education

Ian Campbell was the son of Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll. His mother was Louise Hollingsworth Morris Clews.

He spent his childhood in Portugal and France. He went to school at Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland. He also studied at Glenalmond College in Scotland. After that, he went to McGill University in Canada. There, he studied engineering.

Later Life and Career

In 1953, Ian Campbell became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. This is a group that supports arts, manufacturing, and trade. He also served in the military with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He reached the rank of captain.

After his time in the military, he worked in banking. Then, he spent four years as a sales executive for Rank Xerox Export. He often traveled to countries behind the Iron Curtain during this job.

Managing the Estate

In 1968, he started managing the family's Inveraray Castle estate. He took over this role from his father. When his father passed away in 1973, Ian Campbell became a director for three distilleries. In 1977, he became the Chairman of Beinn Bhuidhe Holdings Ltd. He was also made a Knight of the Venerable Order of Saint John in 1975.

Marriage and Family

In 1964, Ian Campbell married Iona Mary Colquhoun. She was the daughter of Sir Ivar Colquhoun, 8th Baronet. They lived together at Inveraray Castle in Argyll.

The couple had two children:

Both Iona, Duchess of Argyll, and her daughter Lady Louise support the Royal Caledonian Ball.

Death and Burial

The Duke passed away in 2001 at the age of 63. He died from heart failure during surgery. Many Dukes and Duchesses of Argyll are buried at Kilmun Parish Church and Argyll Mausoleum. However, the 12th Duke and his father, the 11th Duke, chose a different burial place. They are both buried on the island of Inishail in Loch Awe.
