Mathilda Campbell, Duchess of Argyll (born Mathilda Coster Mortimer; August 20, 1925 – June 5, 1997) was a Scottish noblewoman. She was the fourth and final wife of Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll. She led an interesting life, traveling between countries and pursuing her passions.
Early Life and Education
Mathilda Coster Mortimer was born on August 20, 1925. Her birthplace was Geneva, Switzerland. Her parents, Stanley Mortimer and Mathilda (née Coster), were from America. Her father owned land in Litchfield, Connecticut. Her mother's father was a well-known banker.
Mathilda spent her childhood living with her grandparents in France. Later, she went to Harvard University. There, she studied philosophy, which is the study of knowledge and existence.
Family Life and Marriages
In 1948, Mathilda married Clemens Heller. He was a professor who taught human sciences. They lived in Paris, France, where he worked at the University of Paris. Mathilda and Clemens had three sons together. They later divorced in 1961.
After her first marriage ended, Mathilda met Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll. He was a Scottish nobleman. They met in Scotland and started a relationship. In 1963, they got married in Horsham, West Sussex. Mathilda became the Duchess of Argyll.
The Duke and Duchess had one child together. Their daughter, Lady Elspeth Campbell, was born in 1967. Sadly, Elspeth passed away just a few days after her birth.
Later Years and Interests
In 1969, the Duke and Duchess moved to France. They spent time living in both Paris and Vézelay. The Duke of Argyll passed away in 1973 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Mathilda was very good at languages. She could speak both French and German fluently. In her later years, she became an author. She wrote a novel called Orian — A Philosophical Journey. This book was inspired by the death of her youngest son.
She also had a strong interest in photography. Mathilda even had an exhibition of her photographs. Her work was shown at the Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh.
Passing Away
Mathilda Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll, passed away on June 5, 1997. She was 71 years old. She died at the American Hospital of Paris. Soon after, she was buried in Vézelay, France. This was close to her home there.
