Ian Robinson Dick (born August 30, 1926 – died September 5, 2012) was a talented Australian sportsman. He was known for playing both cricket and field hockey at a high level.
Ian Dick played one important cricket match for Western Australia in 1950. He also led the Australian hockey team as captain. This was during the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne.
Born in Boulder, Western Australia, Ian came from a family of athletes. His brother, Alexander Dick, also played cricket for Western Australia. Another brother, David Dick, was a school captain and played hockey for Western Australia. Their uncle, Billy Dick, was also a famous sportsman. He captained a team to win the 1914 VFL premiership in Australian Rules Football. Outside of sports, Ian Dick worked as a pharmacist. He passed away in September 2012.

Cricket Career Highlights
Ian Dick started playing cricket when he was very young. He joined the WACA District Cricket competition. By the age of 12, he was already playing C-grade matches for the South Perth Cricket Club. He also played for his school, Wesley College.
Early Club Cricket
Ian made his top-level club debut for West Perth in the 1944–45 season. He was 18 years old at the time. The next season, he moved back to South Perth. This was because South Perth joined the first-grade competition. Later, Ian became the vice-captain for South Perth. He still holds the club record for the most runs scored in first-grade matches.
Playing for Western Australia
In 1950, Ian Dick played one first-class match for Western Australia. This was against the Queensland team. In his first turn at bat, he scored a duck (which means zero runs). But in his second turn, he scored 27 runs. He also captained the Western Australia Colts team in a match against the famous MCC in 1950.
Hockey Career Highlights
Ian Dick was also a very successful field hockey player. He made his first appearance for Western Australia in 1946. Two years later, in 1948, he played his first game for the Australian national team.
Representing Australia
Ian played for the Australian team in every match from 1948 to 1958. This shows how important he was to the team for a whole decade. He was chosen to be the captain of the Australian team at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. During this event, he scored Australia's very first goal in Olympic hockey history. He also captained the Western Australia state team.
Awards and Recognition
Ian Dick's amazing hockey career was recognized with several honors. In 1991, he was added to the Western Australian Hockey Hall of Champions. Later, in 2008, he was also inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame. These awards celebrate his great contributions to the sport.
