Ian De Souza Goodison (born 21 November 1972) is a former professional footballer from Jamaica. He played as a defender, which means he was a player who helped protect his team's goal. Ian spent most of his amazing career playing for the English team Tranmere Rovers.

Ian Goodison's Football Journey

Starting in Jamaica

Ian Goodison was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He started his football career playing in smaller leagues in Jamaica. In 1996, a coach named René Simões noticed his talent. René brought Ian straight into the Jamaican national team!

Ian joined a club called Olympic Gardens in 1997. He also played for a team in the Cayman Islands during this time. Soon, he got a chance to play in England.

Playing for Hull City

Ian Goodison moved to England to play for Hull City in 1999. Hull City was in the Football League Third Division, which was a lower league at the time. He joined with his good friend, Theo Whitmore, who was also from Jamaica.

Ian quickly impressed everyone at Hull City. He played so well that he was named their Player of the Season for the 2000–01 season. This was his first full season in English football! He even scored his first and only goal for the club in a game against Carlisle United. After a few years, Ian returned to Jamaica to play for Seba United.

Years with Tranmere Rovers

In February 2004, Ian Goodison joined Tranmere Rovers. He became a key player in their defence. He played over 350 games for the club, which is a huge number!

Ian was very popular with the fans at Tranmere. They voted him their Player of the Season three times! He also won the North West League One Footballer of the Year award three times. In his first season, he helped Tranmere reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, which is a very important football competition in England.

Ian signed new contracts that kept him at Tranmere Rovers even after his 40th birthday. He was the first player ever to play for Tranmere while in his forties! This shows how fit and dedicated he was.

In 2013, Ian played his 400th game for Tranmere. He was even the team captain for that special game, which they won 1–0.

Testimonial Match

In May 2015, a special game was held for Ian Goodison at Tranmere's stadium, Prenton Park. This type of game is called a "testimonial" and it's played to celebrate a player's long service to a club.

Many of Ian's former teammates from Tranmere played in the match. There were also players from the Jamaican national team and other famous footballers. It was a great way to celebrate Ian's amazing career!

Playing for Jamaica

Ian Goodison also had a fantastic career playing for his country, the Jamaica national team. He made his first appearance for Jamaica in March 1996. What an amazing start – he scored his first international goal in that very first game!

Ian played for Jamaica many times. He holds the record for the most appearances for his country, with 128 games! He also scored 10 goals for Jamaica. Many of these games were in important tournaments like the FIFA World Cup qualification matches and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Ian Goodison played a total of 434 league games for his clubs, scoring 12 goals. He also played in 25 FA Cup matches, 12 League Cup matches, and 23 other games. Overall, he played 494 professional club games, scoring 14 goals. For his country, Jamaica, he played 128 games and scored 10 goals.
