Playing in Powderfinger
Ian Haug helped start the band Powderfinger in 1989. He began the band with bass player John Collins and drummer Steven Bishop. They named their band after a song by famous musician Neil Young.
At first, Ian Haug was the lead singer for Powderfinger. Later, he met Bernard Fanning at university, who joined the band and became the main singer. Jon Coghill also joined as the new drummer. The band's final member was guitarist Darren Middleton. From 1992 onwards, the band's lineup stayed the same: Jon Coghill, John Collins, Bernard Fanning, Ian Haug, and Darren Middleton.
Powderfinger became one of Australia's most popular rock bands. They released many successful albums and toured a lot. In 2004, the band decided to take a break so the members could spend time with their families and work on other music projects. They got back together in 2007 to release their sixth album, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. Their seventh album, Golden Rule, came out in 2009. In April 2010, Powderfinger announced they would stop playing together after their final tour later that year.
Other Music Projects
While playing with Powderfinger, Ian Haug also worked on other bands.
Far Out Corporation
In 1996, Ian Haug formed a band called Far Out Corporation with another musician named Grant McLennan. They made one album and played a few shows, which were well-received by music critics.
The Predators
During Powderfinger's break from 2004 to 2006, Ian Haug started a side project called The Predators. He teamed up with Powderfinger's original drummer and singer, Steven Bishop, and bass player John Collins. The Predators released a six-song album in 2006. When they played live, Ross McLennan played drums, and Steven Bishop sang at the front of the stage.
Joining The Church
In 2013, after Powderfinger had stopped playing, Ian Haug joined another Australian band called The Church. He became their new guitarist. In early 2014, they recorded an album called Further/Deeper, which was released in October 2014. They then toured Australia, the United States, and other countries to support the album.
Ian Haug is now a full member of The Church. He has written and recorded music with the band for their albums, including Man Woman Life Death Infinity. He also toured with them for that album and for their Starfish 30th Anniversary Tour, celebrating one of their most famous albums.
