Ian Haug was born on February 21, 1970. He is an Australian musician. He was the lead guitarist, songwriter, and backing singer for the rock band Powderfinger. He was with them from when they started in 1989 until they broke up in 2010. Today, he is a member of the band The Church.

Powderfinger: The Early Years

Powderfinger started in 1989. The first members were Ian Haug (vocals and guitar), John Collins (bass guitar), and Steven Bishop (drums). They named their band after a song by Neil Young called "Powderfinger". Before Powderfinger, Haug played in other bands in Brisbane.

Later, the band looked for another guitarist. Haug met Bernard Fanning in a university class, and Fanning joined the band. Fanning then became the main singer, taking over from Haug. Around the same time, Jon Coghill joined as the new drummer, replacing Bishop. The last change to Powderfinger's lineup was when Darren Middleton joined as another guitarist. The group of Coghill, Collins, Fanning, Haug, and Middleton stayed together from 1992 onwards.

Side Projects: Far Out Corporation and The Predators

In 1996, Haug and Grant McLennan formed a band called Far Out Corporation. They released one album and played a few shows. People really liked their music.

From 2004 to 2006, Powderfinger took a break. During this time, Haug worked on another project called The Predators. He formed this band with Collins and Steven Bishop, who was the first drummer for Powderfinger. For live shows, Ross McLennan played drums, and Steven Bishop sang.

Powderfinger's Later Albums and Breakup

In 2004, Powderfinger decided to take some time off. This allowed the band members to spend time with their families and work on other music projects. During this break, Haug started The Predators. This band, like other side projects from Powderfinger members, signed with the Dew Process record label. The Predators released a six-song album in 2006.

In 2007, Haug and the rest of Powderfinger got back together. They released their sixth studio album, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. Their seventh album, Golden Rule, came out in 2009. In April 2010, Powderfinger announced that they would stop playing together after their final tour in September and October of that year.

Joining The Church

In 2013, Ian Haug joined the Australian band The Church. This happened after their guitarist, Marty Willson-Piper, left the band. In early 2014, Haug and The Church recorded an album called Further/Deeper. It was released in October 2014, and they toured Australia later that year. Haug then toured with the band in the United States in 2015 and 2016.

Ian Haug is now a full member of The Church. He helped write and record their next album, Man Woman Life Death Infinity. He also toured with them for that album. He joined them again for their Starfish 30th Anniversary Tour. He has also appeared on their more recent albums, The Hypnogogue and Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars.
