Ianis Hagi (born 22 October 1998) is a Romanian footballer. He played as an attacking midfielder or a winger. He last played for Rangers in Scotland and the Romania national team.
Hagi started his professional career at age 16 with Viitorul Constanța. He trained at the academy founded by his father, Gheorghe Hagi. His father is one of Romania's all-time top goalscorers.
In 2016, Ianis moved to Italy to play for Fiorentina. He later returned to Viitorul and helped them win the Cupa României, a major cup competition. In 2019, he joined the Belgian team Genk.
In January 2020, Hagi moved to Rangers in Scotland, first on loan, then permanently. He helped Rangers win the league title in the 2020–21 season.
Ianis Hagi first played for the senior Romania national team in November 2018. He was part of Romania's squad for UEFA Euro 2024. At Euro 2024, Romania won their group and reached the Round of 16.

Ianis Hagi's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Ianis Hagi was born on 22 October 1998 in Istanbul, Turkey. His father, Gheorghe, was playing for Galatasaray at the time. Ianis joined his father's Gheorghe Hagi football academy in 2009.
He made his first professional appearance in Romania's top league, Liga I, on 5 December 2014. He was just 16 years old when he played for Viitorul Constanța.
On 29 May 2015, Hagi scored his first senior goal. He also became team captain in June of that year. In October, The Guardian newspaper named him one of the top 50 young footballers born in 1998.
Playing in Italy
On 10 July 2016, Hagi joined the Italian club Fiorentina. He made his debut for them on 23 October. In April 2017, he was nominated for the European Golden Boy award, which recognizes the best young player in Europe.
Back to Viitorul Constanța
Hagi returned to Viitorul Constanța on 18 January 2018. He was again nominated for the European Golden Boy award in July. During his second time at Viitorul, he scored 20 goals in 53 matches.
He won his first trophy on 25 May 2019. Viitorul defeated Astra Giurgiu 2–1 in the Cupa României final.
Time with Genk

On 12 July 2019, Ianis Hagi signed a five-year contract with Genk, the Belgian champions. He made a great start, scoring the winning goal in his debut match on 26 July 2019. This was in a 2–1 victory against Kortrijk.
He also played in five group stage matches in the UEFA Champions League. Genk finished fourth in their group.
Success with Rangers
Hagi joined the Scottish club Rangers on a six-month loan on 31 January 2020. He made his first appearance the next day. On 5 February, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Hibernian.
Fifteen days later, he scored two goals against Braga in the UEFA Europa League. Rangers won that game 3–2. In May 2020, Rangers signed Hagi permanently.
Rangers went on to win the Scottish Premiership title at the end of the 2020–21 season. Hagi also won the Scottish Premiership Playmaker of the Season award for having the most assists (11 assists). On 17 May 2021, he was named Rangers Young Player of the Year.
In the 2021–22 season, Hagi scored one goal in Rangers' journey to the 2022 UEFA Europa League Final. He scored an equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Brøndby IF. On 21 January 2022, he suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery. He returned to play on 28 January 2023.
On 27 August 2023, Hagi moved to the Spanish club Alavés on loan for one season. He scored his first two goals for Alavés on 2 November 2023 in a Copa del Rey match. Hagi left Rangers at the end of the 2024–25 season.
Playing for Romania
Ianis Hagi played for Romania at many youth levels. These included the under-15, under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 teams.
On 11 September 2018, he scored a goal directly from a corner kick for the Romania under-21 team. Two months later, he made his senior debut for the Romania national team. This was in a 3–0 win against Lithuania.
Hagi was part of the team that qualified for the European Under-21 Championship in 2019. He scored goals against Croatia and England. These goals helped Romania reach the semi-finals, where they lost to Germany.

On 25 March 2021, Hagi scored his first goal for the senior national team. This was in a 3–2 win against North Macedonia during World Cup qualifiers. In the Euro 2024 qualifiers, he scored two goals. One of these was the winning goal in a 2–1 success over Israel on 18 November 2023. Romania finished first in their group and qualified for Euro 2024.

Ianis Hagi is known for his playing style, which is often compared to his father's. He is good at dribbling and passing the ball. He can use both feet well and is a great playmaker.
His favorite position is attacking midfielder. He is quick, agile, and can play in different attacking roles. He can also play as a winger, a second striker, or even a centre-forward. Because of his vision and technique, he can both create chances for his teammates and score goals himself.
Ianis Hagi's Life Outside Football
Ianis Hagi has an older sister named Kira, who is an actress. His father, Gheorghe, met his mother, Marilena, in 1993. Ianis is also the nephew of another former international footballer, Gheorghe Popescu. Ianis's cousin, Nicolas Popescu, is also a footballer.
Hagi has been sponsored by Nike since he was young. In 2019, he provided the Romanian voice for Victor Frankenstein in the Disney movie Frankenweenie.
On 14 July 2024, Ianis Hagi and his girlfriend Elena Tănase had their wedding ceremony. Their civil wedding had taken place earlier in Paris on 25 December 2023.
