About Ibn Amira
Ibn Amira al-Makhzumi was born in a town called Alzira, which is in the Valencia area of Spain. He came from a well-known Berber family. This family had settled in al-Andalus, specifically in a place called Shatiba (now Xàtiva), by the 1000s.
He started his education in Alzira. He focused on studying hadith, which are sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. He also studied fiqh, which is Islamic law. Besides these, he learned a lot about literature. Some of the most famous teachers of his time taught him. These included Abu l-Rabi Ibn Salim, who was an expert in traditions, and al-Shalawbin, a grammar teacher.
His Writings
Ibn Amira wrote about his feelings of sadness after losing his home in Valencia. He called this feeling "paradise lost" (al-firdaws al-mafqud). He shared these feelings in a letter he wrote to his friend, who was also a poet named Ibn al-Abbar.
In his letter, he wrote: "An ocean of sadness rages inside us, Our hearts, desperate, burn with eternal flames. The city was so beautiful with its gardens and rivers, The nights were imbued with the sweet fragrance of narcissus."
Ibn Amira also wrote a book about the history of Mallorca. This book was called Tarij Mayurqa. He wrote it between 1203 and 1232. Later, a historian named Guillem Rosselló Bordoy translated this important book into Spanish.
