What is Icefloe Lake?
Icefloe Lake is a type of lake called a glacial lake. This means it was formed by the movement of huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, many years ago. As glaciers moved, they carved out hollows in the land. When the glaciers melted, these hollows filled with water, creating lakes like Icefloe Lake.
Where is Icefloe Lake Located?
Icefloe Lake is situated in the stunning Grand Teton National Park. This park is famous for its tall, jagged mountains and clear lakes. The lake is about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) west of a mountain called Middle Teton. It's also about the same distance to the south-southeast of another mountain, South Teton.
High Altitude and Ice
Icefloe Lake sits at a very high elevation of about 10,652 feet (3,247 meters) above sea level. Because it's so high up, the temperatures are usually very cold. This means that Icefloe Lake is only completely free of ice for a short time each year, usually in the late summer. For most of the year, its surface is frozen solid.
Size of the Lake
Even though it's a mountain lake, Icefloe Lake is a good size. It stretches about 450 yards (411 meters) long. Its widest point is around 280 yards (256 meters) across. These measurements give you an idea of how big this icy lake is in the heart of the Teton mountains.
