South Teton is a majestic mountain located in Grand Teton National Park in the U.S. state of Wyoming. Standing at about 12,519 feet (3,816 m), it's the fifth-highest peak in the amazing Teton Range.

This peak is found just south of Middle Teton and west of Cloudveil Dome. It's also part of a group of very tall mountains called the Cathedral Group. The Teton Range is quite young, especially for mountains! It's about 40-mile-long (64 km) and started forming only 9 million years ago. This makes it one of the newest mountain chains in the Rocky Mountains. Over time, several periods of glaciation (when huge sheets of ice moved across the land) helped shape South Teton and the other peaks into the incredible forms we see today.

Climbing South Teton

Climbing South Teton is an exciting adventure for many. The first people to successfully reach the top were Albert R. Ellingwood and Eleanor Davis. They made their historic climb on August 29, 1923. Interestingly, Ellingwood also made the first climb of Middle Teton on the very same day! Eleanor Davis was also the first woman to climb the even taller Grand Teton.

Popular Climbing Routes

The most common way to climb South Teton starts by going through Garnet Canyon. You follow a path up to an altitude of about 9,200 feet (2,800 m). From there, a trail leads southwest towards a pass located between South Teton and Middle Teton. Most climbers begin their final ascent to the summit from this pass.

For more experienced climbers, there are also several more challenging routes. These climbs can be quite difficult, sometimes rated up to Class 5.11. This means they require special climbing skills and equipment.
