Iepe B. T. Rubingh (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈipə]; 17 August 1974 – 8 May 2020) was a Dutch performance artist and athlete. He is famous for creating the sport of chess boxing. He also founded the World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO) in Berlin, Germany, in 2003.

Who Was Iepe Rubingh?

Iepe Rubingh was a creative person who combined art, sport, and new ideas. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1974. He became known for his unique projects and for inventing a sport that challenges both the mind and the body.

An Artist Who Loved Big Ideas

As a performance artist, Iepe Rubingh created interesting public art. For example, he once blocked off busy intersections in cities like Berlin and Tokyo. This caused a lot of traffic congestion as part of his art. For the Tokyo event, he was held by the police for a short time.

In 2010, he led a project in Berlin where 500 litres of eco-friendly paint were spread on a street by 2,000 cars. This created a large, colorful artwork on the asphalt.

Creating Chess Boxing

Iepe Rubingh founded chess boxing in 2003. He got the idea from a comic book called Froid Équateur by Enki Bilal. Chess boxing is a sport where players switch between rounds of chess and rounds of boxing. It tests both a person's thinking skills and their physical strength.

Iepe was the President of the World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO) for many years. He also led Chess Boxing Global, which helped promote professional chess boxing around the world. In 2020, a major chess news website, ChessBase, shared many details about Iepe's life and his work in art and sports.

Connection to The Queen's Gambit

The popular Netflix miniseries "The Queen's Gambit" was dedicated to Iepe Rubingh. This show is about a chess prodigy. Iepe was also listed as an "On-Set Chess Consultant" for the series, meaning he helped with the chess parts of the show.
