Location Asturias,  Spain

The Iglesia de San Salvador is an old church in Fuentes, a town in Asturias, Spain. It was built in the Romanesque style, which was popular a long time ago. This church is part of the Roman Catholic faith.

History of the Church

This church has a long history! Records show it existed as early as 1021. An old writing says that Diego Perez supported its creation. Bishop Adaganeo I officially blessed it. Most of the church you see today was likely built in the 1100s.

The area around Villaviciosa, where the church is, was mentioned by a bishop in 1385. The church itself is also noted in documents from 1625. By the 1700s, it was serving as a local parish church. In 1931, the church was recognized as an important historical monument.

During the Spanish Civil War, the church was damaged by fire. But don't worry, it was carefully rebuilt in 1950 to look just as it did before!

The Stolen Cross

The church once had a very special object: a processional crucifix. This was a beautiful silver cross, decorated with jewels and gold. It even had an old Roman cameo on it. This cross was a masterpiece of medieval art from Asturias.

Sadly, in 1898, this valuable cross was stolen. It was sold to private collectors, first in France and then in America. Later, in 1917, a famous collector named J. Pierpont Morgan gave it to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. You can still see it there today!
