Igor Graziano Cavalera (born September 4, 1970) is a Brazilian musician. He is best known as the former drummer for the heavy metal band Sepultura. He started this band with his brother Max in 1984.

Max left Sepultura in 1997. Igor left nine years later, in 2006. This made him the last original member to leave the band. The brothers later started a new band together called Cavalera Conspiracy.

Igor has also played in other bands like Nailbomb and Strife. He also became a DJ as he got more interested in hip-hop music. He is one half of the DJ duo Mixhell, which he started with his wife, Laima Leyton.

In 2016, Igor joined the band Soulwax for their live shows. He became an official member of Soulwax and played drums on their album From Deewee, released in 2017.

Igor Cavalera's Early Life and Music Career

Igor Cavalera started playing drums when he was about seven years old. As a child, he enjoyed samba music. After seeing the band Queen play live in 1981, he started listening to rock music.

When Sepultura was formed, Igor was the youngest member at 13 years old. His brother Max was 14. Sepultura became very successful, giving Igor an early start in music. On April 21, 1984, Igor played on a real drum kit for the first time.

Igor and Max's Reunion

After Max left Sepultura in 1997, the brothers had a difficult relationship. However, their relationship has since improved. In 2006, Igor joined Max's band Soulfly on stage. They played Sepultura songs "Roots Bloody Roots" and "Attitude" together. This was the first time they had played together in ten years.

Igor also played as a guest musician for the band Biohazard on their 2001 album Uncivilization. He also played live for the band Massacration in 2004, using the name "El Covero."

In 2006, Igor started spelling his name "Iggor" because he liked how it looked. On January 13, 2006, he announced he was taking a break from Sepultura. He later decided to leave the band permanently due to "artistic incompatibility," meaning they had different ideas about the music. Jean Dolabella replaced him in Sepultura.

In 2008, Igor released the album Inflikted with his brother Max. This was part of their new project called Cavalera Conspiracy.

In 2012, Igor played drums for the entire Strife album Witness a Rebirth. In 2017, he played drums for Soulwax on their album From Deewee and during their live tour.

In 2018, he started a noise music duo called Pet Brick with Wayne Adams.

Igor Cavalera's Drumming Style

Igor Cavalera has been influenced by drummers like Roger Taylor, Bill Ward, Dave Lombardo, Stewart Copeland, and Mike Bordin.

In the early Sepultura albums, his drumming was very loud and fast. This was typical of the thrash metal style in the 1980s. He became very skilled at this style by 1987–1991, as heard on albums like Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, and Arise.

His drumming style changed and became more unique on the album Chaos A.D.. He added "tribal" sounds and rhythms to the songs. A good example is the start of the song "Territory" from 1993. He continued to develop this style on the 1996 Roots album, adding even more tribal elements to Sepultura's music.

Throughout his career, Igor Cavalera has been known as a very powerful drummer. He hits the drums hard! Later in his career, he changed his drum setup. He used fewer cymbals and set his tom drums upright. This can be seen in the album Live in São Paulo. Critics have praised his drumming, saying his timing and rhythm are perfect.

Igor Cavalera's Personal Life

Igor Cavalera has four children, born in 1996, 2000, 2002, and 2006. He has lived in London since 2013.

He enjoys collecting toys and football shirts. He also has many hobbies, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, snowboarding, surfing, and drawing. He supports the Brazilian football club Palmeiras. He looks up to his father, Graziano Cavalera, as a role model. In 1996, he started his own fashion label called "Cavalera."

On July 5, 2023, Igor's brother Max announced that their mother, Vania, had passed away.
