Band History
The name "Sepultura" means "grave" in Portuguese. The Cavalera brothers picked this name after translating a song by the band Motorhead called "Dancing On Your Grave."
Early Days and First Album
Singer Wagner Lamounier and bass player Paulo Jr. were the first members to join the Cavalera brothers. Wagner Lamounier left after one year. After that, Max decided to sing and play guitar. The band then added a second guitar player named Jairo Guedez.
These members recorded Sepultura's first album, Morbid Visions, in 1986. A song from this album called "Troops of Doom" helped the band become a little bit popular.
New Members and Changing Sound
Jairo Guedez left the band after Morbid Visions was released. Andreas Kisser replaced him as the new guitarist. This group of members stayed together until 1996. During this time, they achieved many things.
They recorded five more albums. Their music style changed over time. The first three albums, Schizophrenia (1987), Beneath The Remains (1989), and Arise (1991), had a thrash metal sound. Then, they moved to a groove metal sound with their next two albums, Chaos A.D. (1993) and Roots (1996). Popular songs from Chaos A.D. include "Refuse/Resist" and "Roots Bloody Roots." On the Roots album, they even included a song called "Itsari" that they recorded with the Brazilian Xavantes tribe. The Xavantes tribe also toured with the band.
Changes in the Band
Max Cavalera left the band because of disagreements with the other members. American singer Derrick Green replaced him. Even though the band's album sales have gone down with each album released with Derrick Green, he is still the singer today. He has recorded many albums with the band, including Against (1998), Nation (2001), Roorback (2003), Dante XXI (2006), A-Lex (2009), and Kairos (2011).
Igor Cavalera left the band in 2006, after the Dante XXI album. A year later, he and his brother Max became friends again. They formed a new band together called The Cavalera Conspiracy. Jean Dolabella was Igor's first replacement in Sepultura. Jean recorded A-Lex and Kairos with the band before he left. Today, the band's drummer is Eloy Casagrande.
