Derrick Green's Early Life
Derrick Green was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 20, 1971. He is the youngest of three children. His sister, Renée Green, is an artist and filmmaker. When Derrick was seven, his family moved to Shaker Heights. From a young age, he wanted to travel. He lived in Berlin for a while. Later, he moved from New York to São Paulo, Brazil.
Derrick Green's Music Career
Before Joining Sepultura
Derrick Green became friends with the band Outface in 1985. He even worked as their roadie. In 1986, at age 15, he joined the band as their singer. Outface played a mix of thrash metal and hardcore.
The band recorded two demo tapes. Later, they signed a deal to record an album. Their album, Friendly Green, came out in 1992. It was named after Derrick's father. The band's music mixed rock, heavy metal, and punk. They even had some ska elements. Derrick was known as Simon Verde in Outface. The band toured a lot in the U.S. and Europe.
After the European tour, Derrick and guitarist Charlie Garriga moved to New York City. They formed a new band called Overfiend. This band played heavier metal and rock music. They recorded a three-song demo. Their first and only show was opening for Sick of It All.
In 1996, Derrick started a band called Alpha Jerk. He played guitar and sang. They released one album. They also played several shows in New York.
Joining Sepultura
In 1997, Derrick Green was contacted by someone from Roadrunner Records. He learned that Sepultura needed a new singer. Max Cavalera had left the band. Derrick was asked to try out for the spot. Sepultura had recorded a song without vocals. They wanted to hear what different singers could do.
Derrick recorded his voice for the song "Choke." He sent it to the band in Brazil. About a month later, Sepultura's drummer, Igor Cavalera, called him. Derrick was asked to fly to São Paulo, Brazil. He would meet the band and audition there. He flew out a week later and auditioned for two weeks. Sepultura then asked him to come back to Brazil. He would start recording his first album with them.
Derrick's first album with Sepultura was Against. It was released in 1998. Most of the songs were written before he joined. The band then went on a world tour. Derrick moved to Amsterdam for a while during the tour. This album was not as popular as Sepultura's earlier works. Many fans missed Max Cavalera. However, critics still saw potential in the band.
Nation was the first album where Derrick helped write all the songs. He moved to São Paulo to be closer to the band. Nation was released in 2001. It did not sell very well. Derrick said the album was about building a "positive nation." He wanted it to have its own flag and anthem.
After Nation, Sepultura left Roadrunner Records. The label released a live album of Max Cavalera's last show. This was against the band's wishes.
Sepultura then released an EP of cover songs called Revolusongs. This EP was first released only in Brazil and Japan. Later, it was added as a bonus disc to their next album, Roorback. The music video for their cover of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" won an award in Brazil.
Roorback came out in 2003. Critics praised the album. They said Derrick was very passionate. They also said the songwriting was strong. Still, sales remained low.
In 2005, Sepultura released a live DVD and CD called Live in São Paulo. Derrick helped film and edit a documentary for the DVD. It showed the band's journey since 1998.
Dante XXI was released in 2006. It is a concept album. It is based on Dante's famous book, The Divine Comedy. Derrick had read this book in high school. He suggested it as an idea for the album. The music video for "Convicted in Life" won awards for best editing and direction.
Critics thought Dante XXI was one of Sepultura's best albums with Derrick. After this album, Igor Cavalera left the band. Jean Dolabella became the new drummer.
Sepultura released A-Lex in 2009. This album is based on the book A Clockwork Orange. Critics said the band kept their energy. They called A-Lex a "superb" album.
In 2010, Sepultura signed with Nuclear Blast Records. Their first album with this label was Kairos in 2011.
Other Music Projects
In 2008, Derrick Green joined another band called Musica Diablo. This was a thrash metal band. They released their first album in 2010. Critics said their music was "extreme fast thrash metal." They praised its "sheer violence and pure Brazilian Thrash Metal!" Derrick later left Musica Diablo.
Derrick has also sung as a guest on other albums. These include Biohazard's Uncivilization. He also sang on the soundtrack for a Brazilian movie.
In 2013, Derrick worked on a project called Maximum Hedrum.
