Early Life and Musical Start
Paulo Jr. was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He grew up with two brothers and a younger sister. His father was a lawyer. Paulo Jr. received his first bass guitar, a white Giannini, when he was 15 years old.
His parents were very supportive of the band in its early days. Paulo Jr. once said, "The support of the parents was one of the keys to our success. We had an empty room and my parents not only lent the space, but also the car to carry the equipment and made lunch for everyone when we were rehearsing."
Musical Influences
Paulo Jr. was inspired by many famous bass players. Some of his influences include Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Cliff Burton, and Gene Simmons. Paulo plays the bass using a guitar pick instead of his fingers.
Music Career
Joining Sepultura
In 1984, Paulo Jr. met the Cavalera brothers in Belo Horizonte. They became friends through someone they both knew. He joined Sepultura after their previous bass player, Roberto Raffan, left the band. Paulo Jr. played his first concert with Sepultura at the Ideal Club. He has been with the band longer than any other member.
Even though he played live with Sepultura from the beginning, Paulo Jr. did not play on their early studio albums. For those albums, Andreas Kisser (the guitarist) played both guitar and bass. This was true for all albums before Chaos A.D. (1993), except for Morbid Visions (1986), where Jairo Guedz handled both roles.
Other Bands and Projects
Cultura Tres
In 2019, Paulo Jr. joined brothers Alejandro Londoño Montoya and Juan M De Ferrari Montoya. They brought back the sludge/thrash metal band Cultura Tres. In 2023, the band released their album Camino de Brujos. They also released three music videos for songs from the album. These songs were "The World And Its Lies," "Proxy War," and "The Land." Paulo Jr. is currently touring with Cultura Tres in Europe and South America.
The Unabomber Files
In 2009, Paulo Jr. started a band called The Unabomber Files. He formed it with Alan Wallace and André Márcio from Eminence, and Vladimir Korg from Chakal. In 2013, the group released an EP with six songs. They also released a teaser for their music video "Buried In My Bunker."
Guest Appearances
Paulo Jr. has also played bass for other artists. In 2007, he played on Sayowa's second album. In 2013, he was a guest musician on Eminence's fourth album, The Stalker. He added extra bass parts to their songs.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Paulo Jr. enjoys jiu jitsu and football. He is a big fan of the football club Clube Atlético Mineiro. He lives in Belo Horizonte.
Helping the Community
Since 1999, Paulo Jr. has organized yearly football charity games. These games bring together former Brazilian football players, TV stars, musicians, and band members. The games take place at the Estádio Municipal Castor Cifuentes in Nova Lima, Brazil. This town is close to Belo Horizonte. People who watch the games are asked to donate food. All the food collected is given to local charities.
In April 2008, Paulo Jr. received the Medalha da Inconfidência. This special award was created in 1952 by former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek. It honors people who have helped develop the state of Minas Gerais and Brazil. The award ceremony was held in Ouro Preto. The Governor of Minas Gerais, Aécio Neves, hosted the event.
