Igor Fyodorovich Maslennikov (Russian: Игорь Фёдорович Масленников; born October 26, 1931 – died September 17, 2022) was a very famous film director from the Soviet Union and later Russia. He made many popular movies and TV shows that people loved.

About Igor Maslennikov

Early Life and Career

Igor Maslennikov was born in Nizhny Novgorod, a city in Russia. In 1954, he finished his studies in journalism at Leningrad University. After that, he worked in television in Leningrad. He was an editor, wrote scripts for shows, and even operated the camera!

In 1965, he decided to learn more about making movies. He joined a special directing course at the famous Lenfilm studio. After finishing his studies there, he became a director at the studio.

Making Movies for Everyone

Igor Maslennikov started directing films in the late 1960s. His first movie was about a high school student. He also made films especially for children, such as Tomorrow and 3 April. He directed movies about sports, like Racers, and historical dramas, such as Yaroslavna, the Queen of France.

He even worked on a movie with Norway called Under a Stone Sky. This film told a sad story about a Norwegian town during World War II. He also directed Sentimental novel, which was based on a real-life story by the writer Vera Panova.

The Famous Sherlock Holmes Films

Igor Maslennikov became very well-known for directing a series of films about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson. He chose amazing actors for these roles, including Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Dr. Watson. Other great actors like Boryslav Brondukov, Rina Zelyonaya, and Nikita Mikhalkov also appeared in the films.

Thanks to the talented actors and Maslennikov's skill as a director, these movies became incredibly popular. Many people still love watching them today!

Winter Cherry and Other Works

In 1985, Maslennikov directed a movie called Winter Cherry. This film became a huge hit and was one of the most popular movies of that decade. The main actress, Yelena Safonova, became very famous because of it. The movie was special because it showed a strong woman who was trying to figure out her life.

Because Winter Cherry was so popular, Igor Maslennikov made two more movies, Winter Cherry 2 (1990) and Winter Cherry 3 (1995). He also created a TV series based on the film in 1997.

In 1989, he directed a TV adventure movie called Philipp Traum. This film was based on an unfinished book by the famous writer Mark Twain. The movie version for cinemas was called Chronicle of Satan Jr.. He also worked with French filmmakers on a movie called The Dark, which starred Oleg Yankovsky.

Awards and Later Years

Igor Maslennikov received many awards for his work. In 1988, he was named People's Artist of the RSFSR, which is a high honor for artists in Russia. In 2001, he received the State Prize of the Russian Federation.

In the year 2000, he released a 10-episode TV series called What Has the Deceased Said. He also started filming The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, which brought together all his famous Sherlock Holmes movies into one story. In 2001, he was part of the jury at the 23rd Moscow International Film Festival.

For his 75th birthday in 2006, Igor Maslennikov finished writing a book about his life and career. He called it The Baker Street in Petrogradskaya, a fun nod to his Sherlock Holmes films.
