Ilam is a suburb in Christchurch, New Zealand. It's located about five kilometres west of the city centre. Ilam is well-known because it's home to the University of Canterbury.
This suburb is easy to get to, as it's close to State Highway 1 and the Christchurch International Airport. It's also near Riccarton, a big area for shopping.
The name "Ilam" comes from a place in England. An early settler named the Hon. John Watts-Russell came from Ilam Hall in Staffordshire, England. He arrived in Canterbury in 1850 and named his property Ilam. The original Ilam homestead is now the University of Canterbury Staff Club. It was also used as a filming location for the movie Heavenly Creatures.
