Ilișești (also known as German: Illischestie in German) is a commune located in Suceava County, in the Bukovina region of northeastern Romania. A commune is like a small local area with its own government. Ilișești is made up of two villages: Brașca and Ilișești.
Until 2004, this commune was called Ciprian Porumbescu. It included the villages of Bălăceana and Ciprian Porumbescu. These villages later became their own separate communes.
A Look Back in Time
During the 1780s, about 12 German families came to live in Ilișești. This happened during a time called the Josephine colonization. These German families were part of a group known as the Bukovina Germans. This community grew in Suceava County and the wider Bukovina area during the late Modern Age. This was when the Habsburg and later the Austro-Hungarian empires ruled the region.
