Inachidae is a fascinating family of marine crabs belonging to the superfamily Majoidea. Commonly referred to as a group of spider crabs or decorator crabs, these creatures are famous across the world's oceans for their extremely long, slender legs and their triangular bodies. They have developed some of the most remarkable camouflage techniques in the entire animal kingdom, often attaching living sponges, seaweed, and tiny ocean animals onto their shells to hide from predators.

Like all crustaceans, spider crabs do not have lungs. Instead, they breathe using delicate gills hidden inside special gill chambers underneath their protective shell. Water flows continuously through these chambers, allowing the gills to absorb dissolved oxygen directly from seawater.

Their eyes are mounted on movable stalks positioned near the base of the rostrum. Next, the crab reaches up and rubs the item firmly against the hooked hairs (setae) on its back and legs. These microscopic hairs work exactly like Velcro fasteners. The tiny hooks snag the fibers of the plant or animal, holding it securely in place.

Why Decoration Is a Superpower

Decorating provides two incredible survival advantages:

  • Visual Camouflage: To a passing fish, an octopus, or a sea turtle, a fully decorated crab does not look like food. It looks identical to a harmless patch of seaweed or a rock covered in sponge.
  • Chemical Camouflage: Many sea sponges and anemones produce foul-tasting or toxic chemicals to stop predators from eating them.
