The inchman ant, also called the "Inch Ant", is a type of bull ant from Australia. These ants are known for their large size. They are found mostly in the southeastern part of Australia.

Inchman ants are famous for their powerful sting. They are considered one of the most venomous ants in the insect world. Even with their strong sting, they are usually less aggressive than some other bull ants.

Meet the Inchman Ant

Inchman ants are quite large, growing from about 15 to 25 millimeters long. This is why they are called "inchman" ants. An inch is about 25.4 millimeters, so they are almost an inch long!

These ants have a purplish-brown body with a black abdomen. They are easy to spot because of their size and color.

Where Do They Live?

Inchman ants live in southeastern Australia. They are very common in the Australian Alps, especially in areas higher than 300 meters. However, you can also find them closer to sea level. They live around cities like Melbourne and in the Adelaide Hills. They are also found on the island of Tasmania.

Inchman ants build their nests in hidden spots. You might find a nest under a rock or in a small hole in the ground.

What Do They Eat?

Like many other bull ants, inchman ants usually search for food alone. They are carnivores, which means they eat other animals. They also act as scavengers, eating dead animals they find.

Their Powerful Sting

Inchman ants have a very strong sting. Their venom is similar to the venom found in wasps and bees. When an inchman ant stings, it can cause a lot of pain.

The sting usually causes a local reaction. This means the area around the sting might become swollen and red. Some people might also feel a bit feverish or get a blister. For a small number of people (about 3%), the sting can cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. If someone has a severe reaction, they need medical help right away.
