Independence is a small community in Tate County, Mississippi, USA. It's called a census-designated place because the government counts its population. However, it's not an official town or city with its own local government.

You can find Independence about 7 miles (11 km) south of Cockrum and 11 miles (18 km) east of Coldwater. It is located right along Mississippi Highway 305. Even though it's not a city, Independence has its own zip code: 38638.

In the 2020 Census, Independence was officially recognized as a "census-designated place" for the first time. It had a population of 200 people.

History of Independence

Long ago, Independence had a couple of interesting names. It was known as "Flewellenes Crossroads" and also "Buck Snorts."

During the Civil War, a man named R.W. Locke put together a group of soldiers in Buck Snorts. This group was sent to Virginia and became Company D of the 42d Mississippi Infantry Regiment. Locke was chosen as the captain of this company.

In 1900, the community had a population of 100 people. By 1907, Independence had grown to include a post office, several stores, two churches, and a public school.
