The Independence of Singapore Agreement 1965 was a very important agreement. It was signed between the governments of Malaysia and Singapore on August 7, 1965. This agreement officially made Singapore an independent country.
The agreement included a special announcement for Singapore. This was made by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. A different announcement was also made by Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
Because of this agreement, Singapore became its own country. It was now separate from Malaysia. Singapore also joined the Commonwealth of Nations. This all happened starting from August 9, 1965. A year later, the Singapore Act 1966 helped make these changes official.
How Singapore Became Independent
Singapore first gained its own power on June 3, 1959. This was from the United Kingdom. From 1959 to 1963, Singapore could manage its own affairs. This is called internal self-governance. However, the British government still handled Singapore's relationships with other countries.
Joining and Leaving Malaysia
On September 16, 1963, a big announcement was made. It was called the Proclamation of Malaysia. This announcement said that the Federation of Malaya would join with other British areas. These areas were North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore. Together, they would form a new country called Malaysia.
When this happened, Singapore became a state within Malaysia. It was an autonomous state, meaning it had some self-rule. But this union did not last long. There were many reasons why it was difficult. The union lasted for only 1 year, 10 months, and 24 days. After that, the Independence of Singapore Agreement made Singapore fully independent.
