Indian Island is a small piece of land located in Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. It's found in the northern part of Maumee Bay, which is a large bay on the lake. This island is part of the state of Michigan in the United States. Even though it's close to the mainland, no one has ever lived on Indian Island permanently.
Discovering Indian Island
Indian Island is located in Monroe County, within Erie Township. It sits just off the shore of a unique area called the "Lost Peninsula". This peninsula is a small piece of Michigan land that is almost completely surrounded by Ohio. It's like a little island of Michigan on the Ohio border!
The island itself is quite small. It has never been a place where people live all the time. It remains a quiet, natural spot in the bay.
The Mystery of Its Name
On some older maps, especially those made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indian Island was sometimes called "Odeen Island" by mistake. At the same time, another island nearby, to the west, was actually labeled "Indian Island".
This mix-up on old maps shows how names can sometimes get confused over time. Today, the island we are talking about is officially known as Indian Island.
