History of Indian Trail
Indian Trail was founded a long time ago, on March 12, 1861. The town gets its name from an old path called the "Indian Trail." This path was used by traders traveling from Petersburg, Virginia, all the way to the lands of the Waxhaw Indians and gold mining areas.
At first, Indian Trail was mostly a farming community. Later, settlers from Germany, Scotland, and Ireland moved to the area. They were drawn by its good location. In 1874, a railroad was built connecting Charlotte and Monroe. This railroad, which still runs through the town, helped Indian Trail grow and become more successful.
Indian Trail officially became a town in 1907. Its first town limits were set as a half-mile circle around where Indian Trail Road and the railroad crossed. The old train station at that spot is still there today. It is now used by an auction business. The railroad line is currently operated by CSX Transportation.
Geography of Indian Trail
Indian Trail is located in the southern part of the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It is a fast-growing suburb about 10 miles southeast of Charlotte. The town is in the northwestern part of Union County. Union County is actually one of the fastest-growing counties in the entire United States!
Indian Trail is surrounded by seven other towns. It also borders parts of Union County that are not officially towns. Because it's close to Charlotte and has good transportation routes, Indian Trail continues to see a lot of growth and new buildings.
The town covers a total area of about 22.1 square miles (57.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small amount being water.
