The Indirana brachytarsus is a special kind of frog. It lives in the Western Ghats mountains in India. You can also find it in the Anaimalai Hills there.
Where does this frog live?
This frog likes to live on the ground. It makes its home in forests that stay green all year. These forests are often near streams on hills. You can find these frogs high up, between 600 and 1508 meters above sea level.
They often hide among the leaf litter on the forest floor. They like the edges of the forest but not wide-open spaces. Sometimes, people have seen them on farms growing cardamom, rubber, or tea.
This frog lives in many safe places. These include Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, and Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Other safe homes are Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
This frog lays its eggs on wet rocks. Its tadpoles are quite special. They are called "semi-aquatic." This means they live partly in water and partly on land.
These tadpoles move across wet rocks and moss. They use their tails to push themselves along. They also use their back legs, which grow much earlier than in other frog tadpoles.
What threatens this frog?
Scientists say this frog is not in immediate danger of disappearing. But some things can still harm it. One big problem is when forests are cut down. This happens for farming, building dams, and other projects.
Sometimes, people try to stop landslides. They use concrete to make roads stronger. But this concrete can fill cracks in rocks. Frogs need these cracks to lay their eggs. Cutting wood for homes can also be a small threat.
Scientists are also worried about climate change. This frog lives high up in the mountains. If the weather gets too hot, it cannot easily move to cooler places.
A fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been found on these frogs. This fungus causes a disease called chytridiomycosis. Scientists are still studying how much this fungus harms the frogs. They do not know if it makes them very sick or causes them to die.
