About Forsten's Tortoise
Forsten's tortoise is part of a group of three similar tortoises. These tortoises are all in the same genus called Indotestudo. The other two tortoises in this group are the elongated tortoise and the Travancore tortoise.
Who Is Forsten's Tortoise Named After?
The name forstenii was given to this tortoise to honor someone special. It is named after Eltio Alegondas Forsten. He was a Dutch botanist, which means he studied plants.
Where Do Forsten's Tortoises Live?
You can find Forsten's tortoise on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia. They also live on nearby islands, like Halmahera island. On Sulawesi, they are mostly found in the central and northern parts.
In North Sulawesi, you might see them near Mount Boliahutu and around a town called Buol. In Central Sulawesi, they live in places like Santigi, the Morowali Reserve, and the Palu and Kulawi Valleys. They are also found near Bora Village and along the western edge of Lore Lindu National Park.

Forsten's tortoises love to live in forests. This is their natural habitat, where they find food and shelter.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Forsten's tortoises lay eggs, which means they are oviparous. Female tortoises that are old enough to have babies lay eggs all year long. Each time, they usually lay one or two eggs.
