Industrial society facts for kids
An industrial society is a type of society where people use advanced technology to make a lot of things quickly. This is called mass production. Because of this, more people can live closer together, leading to a larger population. Also, jobs become very specialized, which is known as the division of labour.
This big change first happened in the Western world during the Industrial Revolution. Before this, most people lived in farming or "agrarian" societies. Today, countries like the United States and many in Europe are good examples of industrial societies. Countries like China and India are also becoming very industrial, but many of their people still work in farming.

What is an Industrial Society?
An industrial society is built around making goods in factories and using machines. Instead of most people growing their own food, they work in different jobs, often in cities. This way of life changed everything, from how people lived to what jobs they did.
How Technology Changed Society
Technology is super important in an industrial society. It allows factories to produce huge amounts of products much faster and cheaper than before. Think about how clothes used to be made by hand, one piece at a time. With machines, thousands of shirts can be made in a day! This means more products are available for everyone.
Mass Production and Specialization
Mass production means making many identical items at once, like cars or phones. This is possible because of machines and a clever way of working called the division of labour. Imagine building a car: one person puts on the wheels, another installs the engine, and so on. Each person specializes in one small part of the job. This makes production very efficient and fast.
The Industrial Revolution: A Big Change
The Industrial Revolution was a time, mainly in the 1700s and 1800s, when new machines and factories changed how things were made. It started in Great Britain and then spread around the world. Before this, most people lived in the countryside and worked on farms. The Industrial Revolution led to:
- Many new factories being built.
- People moving from farms to cities to work in these factories.
- New inventions like the steam engine and power loom.
- A huge increase in the amount of goods produced.
This period completely changed how societies were organized, leading to the industrial societies we see today.
Examples of Industrial Societies
Many countries around the world are industrial societies.
- The United States and countries in Europe like Germany and the United Kingdom have been industrial for a long time. They have strong manufacturing industries and a lot of technology.
- More recently, countries like China and India have also become very industrial. They have huge factories and are major producers of goods for the whole world. However, in these countries, a large number of people still work in farming, showing they are still developing their industrial side.
