Inez (pronounced EYE-nəz) is a small city in Kentucky, United States. It is the main town and county seat of Martin County. In 2020, about 546 people lived there.

Geography and Location
Inez is located in eastern Kentucky. It covers an area of about 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers), and all of it is land. The city's exact location is at 37.866431 degrees north latitude and -82.539058 degrees west longitude.
History of Inez
The area where Inez is now was first settled around 1810 by James Ward. It was originally called Arminta Ward's Bottom. Later, J.M. Stepp renamed it Eden when it became the county seat for Martin County in 1873.
However, there was already a post office named Eden in Kentucky. So, the local postmaster had to choose a new name. On June 23, 1874, the town was renamed Inez. The name is believed to come from Inez Frank, who was the daughter of the postmaster in nearby Louisa, Kentucky.
Presidential Visit to Inez
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Inez. He arrived by helicopter to promote his "War on Poverty" program. This program aimed to help people living in poverty across the United States. At that time, more than 60 percent of the people in Inez were living in poverty.
Economy and Jobs
Inez has several businesses, mostly related to the energy industry. Companies that explore for coal, natural gas, and oil operate in and around Martin County. These companies provide many jobs for people in the area.
Another big employer near Inez is the Big Sandy facility. This is a federal prison run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The Martin County School System serves the students in Inez. The area's high school is Martin County High School. Inez also has a public library, which is a branch of the Martin County Public Library.
