Early Life as a Princess

Maria Amalia was born at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Spain. She was the second daughter of Carlos IV of Spain, who was the King, and his wife, Maria Luisa of Parma. Her mother, Queen Maria Luisa, was a granddaughter of Louis XV of France.

When Maria Amalia was a teenager, her mother planned for her to marry her cousin, Louis, Prince of Parma. Prince Louis came to the Spanish court in 1794. He was known for being handsome and kind. He also loved science.

Maria Amalia was fifteen years old at this time. She was a quiet and shy person. Prince Louis, who was also shy, ended up preferring Maria Amalia's younger sister, Infanta Maria Luisa. Maria Luisa was only twelve, but she was more cheerful. Maria Amalia's parents agreed to this change. However, they needed to quickly find a new husband for Maria Amalia. It would have been embarrassing if her younger sister married first.

Marriage and Later Life

Finding a new husband for Maria Amalia was difficult. Her parents decided she would marry her uncle, Infante Antonio Pascual of Spain. He was twenty-four years older than Maria Amalia. Infante Antonio was thirty-nine years old. He enjoyed gardening, farming, and hunting. He had never married before.

Maria Amalia married her uncle on August 25, 1795. The wedding took place at the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. It was a double wedding! At the same time, her sister Maria Luisa, who was 13, married Prince Louis of Parma. He was Maria Amalia's first intended husband. Both couples continued to live at the Spanish royal court.

In late 1797, Maria Amalia became pregnant. On July 20, 1798, she began to have her baby. The birth was very difficult. After two days, the doctors had to help. Sadly, the baby boy was born stillborn. He was buried at El Escorial. Maria Amalia became very ill after the birth. She had an infection and passed away on July 22, 1798. She was only nineteen years old.
