Inkom is a small city located in Bannock County, Idaho. It is part of the larger Pocatello area. In 2020, about 792 people lived there. Inkom is famous for being home to Simko Field Airport 1ID9, which is known as the smallest airport in the world! Its runway is only 122 meters (400 feet) long.
History of Inkom
The area where Inkom is today was originally named "Ingacom" by the Shoshone Native American people. This name came from a special rock formation on the east side of town. This rock looked like a "Red Hare" or rabbit.
In 1930, a photo was taken of the "Red Hare" after parts of it, like its "ears," were broken off. The local creek was first called "Rabbit River." Later, its name was changed to Rapid Creek, which is what it's called now. Even today, you can still see the "Red Hare" rock formation.

Inkom is a small city in terms of its size. According to official records, the city covers a total area of about 0.75 square miles (1.94 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 0.74 square miles (1.92 square kilometers), is land. A very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.
