Intercity Shopping Centre is a large shopping mall located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It was one of the first shopping malls built in Thunder Bay. Today, it is the biggest mall of its kind in Northwestern Ontario. The mall has a huge space for shops, covering about 456,430 square feet!
A Mall's Journey: Changes Over Time
Malls often change and grow over the years. Intercity Shopping Centre has also changed a lot since it first opened.
In the 1990s, the entire area around the mall got a big makeover. An older strip mall that was there before was taken down. A new, more modern shopping mall was then built in its place.
Big Stores Come and Go
Large stores, often called "anchor tenants," are very important for malls. They help bring many shoppers to the mall. For a long time, Sears and Zellers were two of these main anchor stores at Intercity Shopping Centre.
Zellers closed its doors in January 2013. After that, a new Target store opened in the summer of 2013 in that same spot. However, Target also closed down in April 2015.
Later, in August 2016, a Lowe's home improvement store moved into that big space. Lowe's was another important anchor store for the mall. But it also closed in January 2020. It's common for malls to see stores come and go, which helps keep things new and exciting!
