The International Boundary Marker is a special stone marker. It is also called the Republic of Texas Granite Marker. You can find it on the border between Louisiana and Texas. It is near where two roads meet: Texas FM 31 and Louisiana Highway 765. This spot is southeast of Deadwood, Texas.

This marker was made in 1840 and put in place in 1841. Its job was to show the exact border between the United States and the Republic of Texas. The Republic of Texas was an independent country before it joined the U.S.

Marking the Border

The survey to find this border took a long time. It started in May 1840 and finished in June 1841. The people doing the survey faced many challenges. They worked in wet, swampy areas. Bad weather and not enough money also made them stop work many times.

This marker is very important because it is the only one left from that original Texas border survey. It is also one of only two international boundary markers still found inside the United States today. The other one is a much older, simpler stone near Mobile, Alabama.

Who Owns the Land?

The land around the marker is about 3 acres big. This area is shared between two places. One acre belongs to DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. The other two acres are in Panola County, Texas. The marker itself is owned by the U.S. Government.

A Recognized Landmark

The International Boundary Marker is a historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 13, 1977. This means it is officially recognized as important to history.

In 1980, it received another special honor. The Texas and Louisiana parts of the American Society of Civil Engineers named it a State Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This shows how important its creation was for engineering.
