How Internazionale Torino Started
Before Internazionale Torino, there were two older clubs in Turin. These were not just soccer clubs; they were sports clubs that played soccer along with other games. They were created in 1887 and 1889.
The first club was called Torino Football and Cricket Club. It was started by Edoardo Bosio. He was a merchant who worked in the British textile industry. He brought the game of soccer back to Turin after seeing it played in England. This club was likely the first Italian club to play organized soccer. Their team colors were red and black stripes.
The second club was named Nobili Torino, which means "Turin Nobles". It had important members like Duke of the Abruzzi. Alfonso Ferrero di Ventimiglia, who later became a president of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), was also a member. The Nobili Torino team wore amber and black stripes.
In 1891, these two clubs decided to merge. They combined to form Internazionale Torino. The new club chose to wear the amber and black colors of Nobili Torino.
Playing in the Italian Championship
Internazionale Torino was one of the first teams to play in the Italian Football Championship. This was Italy's top soccer league. In 1898, they competed in the very first championship. Other teams included Genoa and two other clubs from Turin: FBC Torinese and Ginnastica Torino.
The first championship games were held at the Velodromo Umberto I in Turin. Internazionale Torino played in the very first game of the championship. They won against FBC Torinese with a score of 1–0.
In the final game, they played against Genoa. The score was 1–1 at the end of regular time, so they played extra time. Genoa scored two more goals, winning the game 3–1. This meant Internazionale Torino finished as the runners-up, or second place.
The club played in the championship again the next year. In 1899, they beat Ginnastica Torino 2–0. This game was played at their home field, Campo Piazza d’Armi in Turin.
Winning that game meant they qualified for the final once more. Again, they faced their rivals, Genoa. The game was played at Ponte Carrega in Genoa. Internazionale Torino lost 3–1, with Albert Weber scoring their only goal. So, for two seasons in a row, the club finished as runners-up in the league.
In 1900, Internazionale Torino joined with another club called Football Club Torinese. The new combined club decided to keep the name Torinese.
