Sports club facts for kids
A sports club is a group of people who come together to play sports. These clubs can be very different in size and how they are set up.
Some sports clubs are small groups where friends play together for fun. They might play against other local clubs sometimes, with family and friends watching. Other sports clubs are huge organizations with professional players. These big clubs have teams that compete regularly against other clubs. They often attract large crowds of fans who pay to watch. A club might focus on just one sport, or it could be a multi-sport club that offers many different sports.

How Sports Clubs Work
Larger sports clubs often have sections for many different sports. These can include popular sports like football, basketball, volleyball, handball, and rugby. They might also offer less common sports like airsoft or e-sports.
Teams and athletes from one sports club usually wear the same colors and use the same club name. They share the same fans and training places. These teams compete in various leagues and tournaments.
How Clubs Get Money
Many professional sports clubs have a system where fans can become members. These members pay a yearly fee. In return, they can often watch the club's home games and use the club's sports facilities.
Clubs get money from several sources. These include fees from members, ticket sales from games, and deals with sponsors. They also earn money from selling team merchandise (like jerseys) and from TV rights. Sometimes, they get money when players are transferred to other teams.
Some sports teams are owned by big companies that are not mainly about sports. For example, Red Bull GmbH owns several sports teams called the Red Bulls. Other companies like Bayer AG and Philips also own sports teams. These teams might compete in different sports and even in different countries.
Joining a Sports Club
When an athlete plays for a competitive club, they usually register with only one club for each sport. They play for that club for the whole season or competition. Sometimes, players might move to another club through a trade or loan agreement.
It's more common for athletes to join multiple clubs in individual sports. For example, a runner might join a track and field team and also a road running team. They might also be a member of a local club just for training. Some sports groups ask athletes to say which club is their main one.
Sports Clubs Around the World
In many parts of the world, like Europe, North Africa, and South America, multi-sport clubs are very popular. These clubs often have professional teams and are important sports organizations. Student sports teams, often representing schools or universities, are also usually multi-sport clubs.
Clubs in North America
In the United States, major sports leagues like the NFL (American football) and NBA (basketball) have teams that are often called "sports clubs." However, these teams usually focus on only one sport.
There are some exceptions. For example, the One Buffalo group owns several teams, including the Buffalo Bills (NFL) and the Buffalo Sabres (ice hockey). This group is called a "sports and entertainment" company.
In American colleges, "varsity teams" are usually part of a multi-sport club for the school. But "club sports" in colleges are different. These are sports teams run by student groups, not directly by the college.
Clubs in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, most big sports organizations focus on just one sport. For example, Manchester United is a football club, and Lancashire County Cricket Club is a cricket club. They are separate, even if they are in the same city.
One exception is Cardiff Athletic Club in Wales. It owns the Cardiff Arms Park and has sections for cricket, rugby union, field hockey, tennis, and bowls. Many football clubs in the UK actually started as cricket teams a long time ago.
Football Clubs Worldwide
Many clubs around the world call themselves "football clubs" (like "FC" or "CF"). In the UK, these clubs usually only have football teams. But in many other countries, clubs called "football clubs" are actually multi-sport clubs. Examples include F.C. Porto in Portugal and FC Bayern Munich in Germany.
