→Interstate 19 (I-19) is a special road in Arizona, United States. It's part of the Interstate Highway System, which connects states across the country. I-19 starts in Nogales, right at the border with Mexico. From there, it travels north to the city of Tucson.
This highway is about 63.35 miles (102.08 kilometers) long. It's a key route for people traveling between these two cities and the border.
What Makes I-19 Special?
Interstate 19 is unique because it's the only Interstate Highway in the United States that uses metric units for its signs. This means instead of showing distances in miles, the signs show distances in kilometers. This was done to help people traveling from Mexico, where the metric system is used.
Where Does I-19 Go?
I-19 begins in Nogales, a town right on the U.S.-Mexico border. It then heads north through Santa Cruz County and Pima County. Along its way, it connects with several other important roads.
Some of the main roads that cross or meet I-19 include:
- Arizona State Route 189 (AZ 189) in Nogales.
- Arizona State Route 289 (AZ 289) in Rio Rico.
- Arizona State Route 86 (AZ 86) in Tucson.
The highway ends when it meets Interstate 10 (I-10) in Tucson. This connection helps travelers continue their journey to other parts of Arizona or beyond.
Building I-19
The construction of Interstate 19 began in 1963. It was built to provide a modern and efficient way to travel between Nogales and Tucson. The highway has helped connect communities and support trade between the U.S. and Mexico.
