Interstate 2 (I-2) is a major highway in South Texas. It is part of the Interstate Highway System, which connects states across the United States. This highway is still being built in some parts.
I-2 runs through a special area called the Lower Rio Grande Valley. It helps people travel easily across this part of Texas.

Where Does Interstate 2 Start and End?
Interstate 2 begins in a town called Penitas. Here, it connects with U.S. Highway 83 (US 83). It also connects with a business route of US 83.
From Penitas, I-2 travels eastward. It passes through several cities in Texas. The highway finally ends in Harlingen. In Harlingen, it meets other important highways like I-69E, US 77, and US 83.
Sharing the Road: I-2 and US 83
For its entire length, Interstate 2 shares the road with US 83. This means that if you are driving on I-2, you are also driving on US 83 at the same time. They follow the exact same path.
I-2 also runs next to another important road. This road is called Mexican Federal Highway 2 (Fed. 2). Fed. 2 is a major highway in Mexico. It follows the border between Mexico and the United States. This border is along the Rio Grande river.
Future Plans for Interstate 2
Interstate 2 is not fully finished yet. When it is completed, the western part of the highway will reach the city of Laredo. This will make it even easier to travel across South Texas.
