Inverness is a small town in Sunflower County, Mississippi, United States. In 2020, about 868 people lived there.
This town was once a very important place for farmers. It had the biggest cotton gin in the Mississippi Delta. Farmers would bring their cotton here to be processed. In 1971, a strong tornado caused a lot of damage to the town.

Historic Weather Event
On February 21, 1971, a very powerful tornado hit Inverness. It was an F5 tornado, which is the strongest kind. This tornado was part of a larger storm system that affected many towns in Louisiana and Mississippi.
The storm caused a lot of destruction. Many houses in Inverness were completely destroyed. Sadly, 21 people from Inverness lost their lives because of this tornado. Across rural Mississippi, a total of 36 people died from the storms.

Inverness is located in Mississippi. The United States Census Bureau says the town covers an area of about 1.4 square miles (3.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The town is located about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi.

Schools for Kids
The schools in Inverness are part of the Sunflower County Consolidated School District. Students living in Inverness go to schools in Moorhead, Mississippi. As of 2012, high school students attended Ruleville Central High School, which is now called Thomas E. Edwards, Sr. High School.
After schools began to integrate (mix students of different races) in the mid-1900s, some white parents took their children out of the public schools. The public school for white students in Inverness then closed. These students started going to a private school in Indianola.
Inverness School (for grades K-8) was the only public school in Inverness for a while. However, Inverness School closed in 2022. Now, students from Inverness go to schools in Moorhead.
Central Delta Academy was a private school built in Inverness. It was known as a "segregation academy." This means it was created for white students whose parents did not want them to attend the integrated public schools. Central Delta Academy closed on May 21, 2010. The building was later sold and torn down in 2011.
Colleges and Universities Nearby
There are a few colleges and universities close to Inverness. Delta State University is a public research university. Mississippi Valley State University is a historically black college, which means it was founded to educate Black students.
Public Libraries
The Sunflower County Library system runs the Inverness Public Library. This library has moved locations a few times. It used to be in a "Community House." In 1962, it moved to a building that was once a grocery store. By 2012, the library was located inside the Inverness City Hall.
