History of Iowa Colony
Iowa Colony started in 1908. It was founded by a company from Des Moines, Iowa. Two people from Iowa, G. I. Huffmann and Robert Beard, gave the city its name.
A post office opened in 1919. Farmers started growing rice there in 1920. Even though Iowa Colony was not directly on a railroad line, trains could reach it through nearby Manvel.
The number of people living in Iowa Colony grew slowly for many years. In 1948, oil was discovered nearby, which created jobs in the area. The post office closed in 1961. However, in the 1960s, the town began to grow much faster as part of the greater Houston area.
Iowa Colony officially became a city in 1972. By 1989, about 661 people lived there. The city hall, community center, and court are all in one building, next to the fire department. In 1990, the population was 675. By 2010, it had grown to 1,170 people.
The city has grown very quickly. In 2019, the population was estimated to be 3,233. By 2020, it had more than 5,000 people. This allowed Iowa Colony to become a "Home Rule City." On November 3, 2020, citizens voted to approve their own city rules. In 2021, the city's website said the population was over 8,000, growing very fast.
In the early 1990s, Iowa Colony was known for being a "speed trap." This means the city made a lot of money from giving out speeding tickets. This led to a Texas law that limited how much money cities could make from speed traps.
