History of Iraan
How Iraan Became an Oil Town
Iraan grew very quickly because of oil. In 1926, a huge oil field called the Yates Oil Field was found nearby. This discovery made Iraan an "oil boom town." This means many people moved there to work in the oil industry.
The first buildings were homes and facilities for oil workers. These were built by the Big Lake Oil Company. Over time, other companies like Plymouth Oil, Ohio Oil, and Marathon Oil owned the field. Today, Kinder Morgan owns it.
Early Days and Growth
By 1927, Iraan had its own school. A post office opened in 1928. The town's population grew to about 1,600 people by 1930.
Another oil town called Redbarn appeared about 3 miles (5 km) south of Iraan. Redbarn was mostly tents and small shacks. It was very close to Ira Yates's ranch. Ira Yates gave 152 acres (0.62 km²) of his land to Iraan. This helped Iraan grow even more. Redbarn was eventually abandoned in 1952. It never had more than 75 permanent residents.
Famous Resident: V.T. Hamlin
One well-known person from Iraan was V.T. Hamlin. He created the famous comic strip Alley Oop. Hamlin worked in Iraan during the oil boom in the late 1920s. He got the idea for his comic strip there. Alley Oop was first published in 1932. Today, a park in Iraan is named after the comic strip.
